Meet the Black Bears of South Walton—the county’s most curious (and least licensed) real estate critics.
Local legend says that Mama Bear and her two cubs have a very particular checklist. Forget granite countertops or smart thermostats. Their priorities are much simpler.
“Excellent oak trees,” Mama Bear reportedly noted while wandering through a wooded neighborhood.
“Convenient berry access,” added one cub.
“Five stars for the bird feeders,” said the other, moments before being politely encouraged to leave by wildlife officials and several surprised homeowners.
Unlike human buyers, bears aren’t interested in open floor plans. In fact, they seem downright unimpressed by chef’s kitchens and luxury bathrooms. But leave a garbage can unsecured, and suddenly your property receives an unexpected showing.
Neighbors have occasionally spotted these furry visitors strolling through yards with the confidence of longtime residents, as if they’re evaluating curb appeal for the next issue of Bear & Garden Magazine.
“Nice landscaping,” one bear appeared to think while investigating a magnolia tree.
“Could use more blueberries.”
Fortunately, South Walton’s black bears generally prefer peaceful coexistence. They’re simply native Floridians who happened to move into the area long before anyone invented homeowners' associations.
Wildlife experts remind residents that bears should never be fed and that securing trash and removing attractants helps keep everyone safe. After all, a bear’s idea of a gourmet meal should remain in the forest—not in your recycling bin.
So, if you happen to glimpse a black bear ambling through South Walton, remember that you’re sharing one of Florida’s most beautiful places with some truly remarkable neighbors.
And if one pauses in front of your house for a few seconds, don’t panic.
